Monsieur Jean Paul Gaultier has collaborated with French furniture manufacturer Roche Bobois to curate a limited collection comprised of new designs as well as reinterpreted classics like the Mah Jong sofa, created by Hans Hopfer in the 1970's.

Jean Paul Gaultier, often referred to as enfant terrible of the fashion industry, is an undisputed heavy-hitter in the ephemeral world of couture, yet has had no formal training. He started creating collections for his mother and grandmother at age 13, by 17 he confidently sent a series of sketches to famed Parisian designer Pierre Cardin. The drawings impressed Monsieur Cardin enough to hire the young lad as an assistant. After only a few short years, J.P.G. launched his own line. The rest, as they say, is history.

After decades of pushing the design envelope in the fashion industry; introduction of the man skirt in 1985, Madonna's infamous cone bra costume in 1990, and corsets for men in 1997 Mr. Gaultier is the latest fashion designer to catwalk his way into the interior / furniture design field. The divide that once existed between the two industries seems to be shrinking at warp speed and I, for one, am excited to see what transpires.

First off -a thousand pardons. I've been a terribly neglectful blogger. Although I can't promise to be more diligent about postings; I can say that I sincerely appreciate the supportive outreach from so many of you who seem to enjoy the musings of one often tipsy young man in the District.

All right, I'm surely not the first to announce the possession of an extreme crush on one talented and beautiful Mr. Nicolas Ghesquiere. Creative Director of the venerable fashion house Balenciaga Mr. Ghesquiere, or Nico as I so innocently refer to him, started from humble beginnings.

According to The New York Times, Interview, Wikipedia, or some other such stable sounding board for information that I surely briefly perused while finishing off a few bottles of Hoegaarden, Mr. Ghesquiere obtained an internship at Agnes B in Paris at age 15. By 21, he was working for John Paul Gaultier. But, in 1996 (A year within a decade of decidedly unfashionable fashion) Nicolas was hired by Balenciaga, then a house resting in a pit of passe despair, to design uniforms for a Japanese licensing company. Nico quickly climbed the the ranks, and come 2000 his frocks would be seen shrouding the trendiest of all celebrity skeletons; Nicole Kidman, Chloe Sevigne, and the Olsen twins to name a few.

Well, while scouring the overflow of photos in my files I came across some of a chic apartment in Paris inhabited by this peculiar creature known as Nicolas Ghesquiere. The maisonette is simultaneously effortless and thoughtful, chic and stoic, old and new. This grand aesthete embodies a style that your timid host can only aspire to one day graze.

But, he's such a great fashion designer....

Head on over to The Fashion Informer for a look at a Zack Posen designed model apartment.... It reeks of imitation Miles Redd to me. No offense to his immense talents as a very gifted fashion designer, but this dip into the interior design pool has left me less than impressed. Perhaps one has to see the space in person to fully appreciate it.

At a time post "reality television" and perhaps in the throng of "social networking" I find it far too unnervingly simple to become enamored by virtual strangers. This is, of course, only my personal opinion. Some such endearing connections are often sincere, effortless, and welcome; examples include, but are not limited to: my extreme, and instant, infatuation with the beautiful Lisa Borgnes Giramonti of A Bloomsbury Life (Honestly, who can resist her?), and Nick Olsen of Nick Olsen Style; an exceedingly creative designer, unabashed blogger, and all-around dreamboat. While other less successful artificial connections can leave a person (me) feeling bruised and battered; Gael Garcia Bernal why won't you love me?! Well, I've recently developed a new virtual crush; From the Desk of Lola.

From the Desk of Lola is an seemingly unorthodox design firm with offices in both LA and NY. They've been talked about and praised in trade publications, the blogging community, and around my kitchen island. Designers Alexandria Loew and Lauren Soloff spearhead the operation, which offers clients "Mood Movies" upon the inception of the design process. What is a "Mood Movie" one might ask... well, it seems as though these dynamic ladies create a multi-media presentation including clips from movies to inspire the job. What a brilliant idea! My modest creativity is perpetually sparked by films; Breakfast at Tiffany's, How to Marry a Millionaire, Age of Innocence, and Marie Antoinette to name a few.

I was asked recently by So Sylvie to participate in a fun little virtual project of redesigning Gerard Butler's Chelsea loft, which is featured in Architectural Digest this month. It seems that his newly renovated pad has been getting quite a lot of attention on the net. I'm not judging, as a matter of fact I sheepishly admit that I had never heard of Gerard Butler until now. All that I know is that he lives in a space boasting bones as sophisticated and prolific as those that once graced the face of the uberdistinguished Katharine Hepburn.

This is my answer:
I understand, after having read the A.D. article, that Gerard Butler has played some mighty meaty roles; the Spartan king, Attila the Hun, Dracula, the Phantom of the Opera, and Beowulf. Also, that his interior designer, Elvis Restaino, is a set designer... the photos in A.D. of his apartment are hugely theatrical. No doubt Architectural Digests' ridiculously over-the-top lighting extravaganza plays a part in theatrics of the photos, but all of the columns, many crystal chandeliers, and thrones placed throughout the pad also contribute to the weightiness, and overall phoniness of its appearance. I think that I'd start by cleaning house. Toss all of the "props", paint & paper the walls, and collect furniture with some provenance to appeal to Gerard's obvious attraction to history.

Good Wood

Yes, it certainly is an attention grabbing name, but what heralds more heed than the moniker is the shop itself. Good Wood is the brainchild...err... teenager (this year marking its sweet sixteen) of Dan and Anna Kahoe, furniturephiles extraordinaire. A delightfully creative couple who have cultivated a store that is more about a lifestyle than about product for sale. They forage the Eastern Shore weekly for artifacts to be brought back and placed lovingly in ever-changing vignettes. The shop is a constant source of answers and inspiration for designers, local residents, and tourists alike.

As if being proprietors of an ubercool DC shopping destination wasn't enough evidence that this duo has style in spades, take a look at their home; The Louise Hand Laundry. A former upscale laundry facility which had been used by the cream of District society, as well as White House administrations from the 1930's - 1960's. And, for the cherry on top, Anna is also co-owner of ultra hip design firm "Old School Interiors".

I've recently started working at the shop Wednesdays - Fridays, and couldn't be happier. Each week I fall in love with at least a dozen new things. If you're in the DC area, please stop by to visit me and the Kahoe's!

Bringing up Baby

One of my Top 5 favorite movies Bringing up Baby is ripe with good times, and was the first slapstick comedy inducted into the Movie Hall of Fame. Katharine Hepburn shrugged off the archetypal strong woman role to play an irresistibly sweet admirer (stalker) of the goofy paleontologist, Dr. David Huxley - Cary Grant.

And, in the vein of a recession the song, and story, provides a nice reminder; "I can't give you anything but love, baby. That's the only thing I've plenty of, baby."

“Dashing and daring, courageous and caring, faithful and friendly with stories to share.” Okay - maybe I ripped that line from the opening of the 1980‘s cartoon series Gummy Bears, and I know how inappropriately tacky that might sound, but it does, however, describe Garrow Kedigian brilliantly. I was lucky enough, recently, to have spent a couple of evenings chatting with Mr. Kedigian, and was left feeling inspired. This designer, named one of Traditional Home’s 20 young designers “we’ve got our eye on”, has a passion and drive for his career unlike anything I’ve witnessed. He clocks exceedingly long hours, travels about the globe working on projects here and there, manages a staff at his studio, keeps a beautifully appointed home, and still makes time to meet his adoring fans.

Raised in Montreal, Mr. Kedigian studied architecture at the prestigious McGill University after which he moved to Boston to work for the venerable William Hodgins. Six years later, Mr. Kedigian moved to New York City to work with Marjorie Shushan and Eric Cohler before establishing his own design firm. His outstanding portfolio is a visual testament of his timeless and relevant ability and taste. This is a young designer who is on his way to establishing himself among the captains of his industry.

Sebastian Brajkovic: a contortionist of classic design

"Truly new and useful products and ideas unite the future, present and past" -Well said, Sebastian Brajkovic. This innovative and thoughtful young designer, born in Amsterdam, studied cabinet-making before entering the Design Academy Eindhoven with the intention of "melding art and design" -and, meld art and design he did! Brajkovic seamlessly manipulates classic designs into the present. His pieces evoke a strong sense of movement and of continuation. Check out his frenetic website for more information and images.

Restoration Hardware has done it yet again. Their collections have been increasingly impressive, and the Spring / Summer outdoor "Garden" collections are sure to please all. Not only are the pieces exquisitely designed, and run the gamut from classic to modern, but the accompanying outdoor textiles and accessories are gorgeous. And, as if this weren't enough good news, the prices are modestly set. My favorite is the newly introduced Klismos collection comprised of timeless silhouettes nodding to an ancient provenance. I've long been enamored of Nicolas Ghesquiere, not just because of his devilish good looks, success at such a young age, influence within the fashion industry, and ability to create truly stunning work, but also because he seems to carry himself in such a mature and confident manner in the media.... well, that was until he was seemingly blindsided in a recent interview by the living EGO that is Tom Ford.

Poor Nico... I can't imagine how uncomfortable he must have felt during that phone call. Nico, if you ever feel like calling me I'd gladly ask you about your life, career, interests, and passions. I promise not to sit uncomfortably naked and wax egotistically about how fantastic I am. I'm all ears.

How to Marry a Millionaire (according to Schatze Page)

Perhaps a foremother to Sex and the City, and one of my absolute favorite movies, not only because it's fun to watch, the costumes are fantastic, the actors amazing, the soundtrack super catchy, and the street scenes of 1950's New York mesmerizing, but the sets...oh, the sets... are aces! How to Marry a Millionaire was released in 1953 and broke a multitude of records in terms of advancement in technology. It starred Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall. It's a story about three beautiful New York women searching for millionaires, but ending up with true loves. Schatze was the great exception, she found love in a millionaire (lucky gal).

At the start of the movie, Schatze shows up at an appointment to look at a penthouse at Sutton Place South and East 55th.

The ladies are perpetually broke so they contact auto dealerships to "demonstrate rides" for them. It's cheaper than a taxi!

The greatest trip I've never taken.

I'm terribly bored, and yearning for a trip. As I write this I'm held up in my small studio surrounded by an extremely lazy cat, Ella, and an equally lethargic dog, Louie. The District has been struck, yet again, by a monstrous snow storm which has rendered her completely unable to host any events, such as work, but has encouraged a noticeably lackadaisical shift in her residents. The novelty of idle weekdays filled with late brunch dates that bled into early cocktails has faded. Not that it hasn't been grand and almost overwhelmingly hedonistic, but one does eventually tire of the "easy life". Plus, with the lack of work, which equates to lack of pay, my shiftless animals and I are about to become homeless!

While sifting through the internet on one such slothful afternoon I came across the Hotel Particulier. Discretely located at the end of a small alley in Montmartre, 23 Avenue Junot, Hotel Particulier is exactly what I, Ella, and Louie need. It's a shame that I have no money for the trip. For now I will simply have to be satisfied with looking at the pictures and sipping some cheap champagne while one of my Edith Piaf records plays in the background.

Craft Hope for Haiti

ABODEWELL, blogger and crafter extraordinaire, has introduced me to Craft Hope, a division of Etsy that sells beautifully handmade crafts to help support worthy causes.

Craft Hope has compiled a group (74 items and counting) of crafts specifically meant to support relief efforts in Haiti. According to Craft Hope's site: "All proceeds of Craft Hope Etsy shop will benefit Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. All items have been generously donated by the crafting community."

They do have some pretty terrific items for sale. Seeing as Valentines Day is just around the corner (shudders as he types that), why don't you buy something special, thoughtful, and original for a loved one, and help support Haiti.

Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

In 1885-86 Pierre Lorillard IV, the dapper gentleman shown below, along with land planner Ernest Bowditch, architect Bruce Price, and about 1,800 immigrant laborers created a resort for the thick cream of American society.

Located just 40 miles outside of New York City, Tuxedo Park, became a playground for great social, financial, and political leaders of the day ; Dorothy Draper, J.P. Morgan, Alferd Loomis, and William Waldorf Astor to name a few.

Word spread quickly encouraging New York's 400, give or take a few, to establish themselves in this newly fashionable enclave.

Soon, massive mansions began to spring up within the "naturally" planned landscape inside of the gilded walls. The new residents commissioned the best architects of the day, among them; McKim, Mead & White, James Renwick, John Russell Pope, and William Lescaze.

Shortly after the Great Depression many of the Tuxedo Park socialites began to move, leaving behind an architecturally significant piece of American history. Today, Tuxedo Park is considered a National Landmark, and the homes that were built by social giants remain filled with the most prominent members of modern society.

Fun Facts about Tuxedo Park:

Emily Post's father, Bruce Price, was the original architect to work on the development of the resort. It was at Tuxedo Park during Emily Post's impressionable years that she collected the information for her famous book "Etiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage".

Pierre Lorillard is rumored to have designed the tailless evening jacket, or Tuxedo as he called it, for a grand ball held at Tuxedo Park in October of 1886.

I'm a self-proclaimed classic movie junkie. I grew up in a very small / very modest town in Appalachia, which never seemed to fit me properly. I would watch these films, or rather study them, and somehow feel right. I wanted to be Paul Varjak, C.K. Dexter Haven, Caleb 'Cal' Trask, Brad Allen (Rex Stetson), and sometimes (or, rather too often) Schatze Page. They were cool. They dressed with such amazing style, spoke with elegant and witty candor, they drank scotch, smoked, drove beautiful cars, always got the girl (or guy), and were all around awesome.... in my opinion. These movies have been such an influence in my life, not just in the way that I design, but in the way that I live.

One prop, in general, stands out to me as a symbol of chicness unparalleled in today's films -the table lighter. Smoking, although I'm not a fan of, was not only standard in film, but in life. I don't smoke. I can't stand the smell of it. But, there is something somewhat intriguing about it. It's a sort of classic ritual, and when performed properly and with appropriate accoutrement; a silver cartier cigarette case, a tiffany lighter, etc. can be quite dashing.

An Education

What a terrific film! The sets... the wardrobe..... the soundtrack....... the actors...... PARIS! An Education is an engaging, sweet, playful, inspiring, and thoughtful film. I'm a notoriously harsh critic, and have ridiculously high expectations. I internally gage a film as I'm watching it. I categorize and archive them in the dusty metal filing cabinets of my mind according to certain criteria; visually stimulating, impressive actors, well written story, haunting score, etc.

Movies, for me, have an affect depending on what's going on in my life. I, at 29, can empathize so much with the character Jenny, brilliantly played by the stunningly beautiful Carey Mulligan. Although Jenny is exploring the awkward transitional period between pseudo childhood and pseudo adulthood. I feel like I'm experiencing the same humiliating evolution from pseudo adulthood to whatever the next stage is.

This is, of course, only my experience. I'll surely encourage anyone that I know, and some people that I don't, to see it before it leaves theaters.

Grand Illusions

Oh, John Brauer.... such a clever gentleman, and inventor of the Grand Illusion Table (shown above). I'm fascinated by clear furniture. A fascination most probably sparked by the first time that I had ever seen Phillippe Starck's Louis Ghost Chair.

And, more recently the clear chiavari chair.

These pieces ignite a sort of Alice in Wonderland wit and playfulness while paying homage to their pedigreed provenance. They may be trendy, dated, passé, etc., but I can't help but adore them.

The Romantic Egotist... and his waltzing partner

I've had the Fitzgeralds, F. Scott & Zelda, on the brain lately. Although I've long been an admirer of F.S.F.'s writing, I knew very little of him and his wife. So, one particularly lazy evening I, and Johnny Walker, googled the couple to see what we could find out.

As it turns out this titillating twosome had more charisma than any of his brilliantly developed characters. Their lives defined a storied time in American history full of sex, drugs, scandal, and jazz. They, along with literary icons such as; Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Sherwood Anderson, T.S. Elliott, Gertrude Stein and many more, formed the Lost Generation and left in its wake a collection of work that continues to inspire and entertain us.

As I continue to read and learn about this fascinating couple I become more enthralled with their lives and with their wickedly apt network of contemporaries. Zelda, for instance, was not only a beautiful lady, but a beautiful artist as well.

It was also in my recent quest to learn more about the Fitzgerald's that I found out that they are buried in Rockville Maryland, a suburb just outside of the District. Well, the combination of my love for cemeteries and strong interest in this compelling couple was reason enough for me to hop in my car and head to Rockville.

The couple is buried along with their daughter and a few other Fitzgerald family members in a very small graveyard attached to a modest structure -Saint Mary's church, built in 1817.

I can only imagine what a peaceful setting this must have been in 1817.... juxtaposed now by busy roads and austere cement clad buildings. I'll refrain from showing that aspect of Saint Mary's. The graveyard is lovely, despite it's unfortunate location.

Oak Hill, or the story of a boy

As a child I would sit in my room and wait for overcast misty days. Having grown up in the shadows of appalachian mountains, my lust for cloud leaden skies was realized often. The dullness seemed to impose an opposite effect on me than it did others. I felt enthusiastic, optimistic, and encouraged to seek adventure. I’d slip on my favorite pair of penny loafers, top coat, and grab an umbrella before heading out the door. (my poor parents, at least they had the fortune to have given birth to two masculine boys ahead of me) I’d walk around the narrow broken cement paths of my neighborhood sidewalks and keep the canopy of my umbrella tilted to an angle that would sufficiently conceal the familiar landmarks surrounding me. I’d imagine myself scouring the gloomy cobblestone streets of victorian London in search of great escapade, romance, or maybe culinary delight (all depending on what story I’d secretly concocted earlier that day).

As I grew up I grew out of my tendency to create solo theatrical performances... or at least my tendency to act them out in the streets of my neighborhood. I was content simply to brood melancholy amongst my fellow puberty riddled contemporaries.

By the time that I’d moved away to college I had convinced myself that I’d fully shed the overly dramatic layer of my personality that had led me on too many walks through too many self-produced imaginary cities. But, it seems that the gods weren’t as convinced. Perhaps as a test to the maturity of my character, I had unknowingly moved into a house but half a block from one of the most magical places that I’ve had the fortune to visit.

Homewood Cemetery is an ethereal living museum of meandering paths lined by passive trees. Tucked away here and there are classical architectural models of human scale. Designed to protect those entombed within their stoic marble walls, and to intimidate those passing by.

This post isn’t about Homewood, but about the respect and appreciation of cemeteries that has been emblazoned in my psyche by that grand knowing matriarch of U.S. cemeteries.

Georgetown, Washington DC, has a deep and fervent past predating the Capitol city. This humble village within the District plays host to a number of big box retailers and some intimately splendid private operations. Darrell Dean Antiques, located at 1524 Wisconsin Avenue NW, offers a veritable melange of product assortment sure to satisfy even the most staunch of furniture collectors. Not only do they entertain a location in Washington DC, but also in New York at Center 44, 222 East 44th Street NY, NY, and on 1st Dibs. After building up enough energy, we journeyed to the temporary kitchen to make a little coffee...

Then, it was back to the sofa computer in one hand coffee in the other. Realizing that my mind wasn't quite awake I decided to wade through the deep abyss that is Ebay. Not particularly focusing on anything I came across my newest obsession... a chest so stunning in its form and finish that it would bring even the most pompous of furniture aficionados to his knees.

A Streetcar Named Desire

Last week I attended a Sydney Theatre Company production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Kennedy Center. Now, I'd like to say that I went because I'm a patron of dramatic arts, or because I'm an aficionado of classic literature, but my decision to go was based mostly on the fact that Cate Blanchett was playing the role of Blanche DuBois. Suffice it to say I have no merit to pen a declaration of my judgement regarding the quality of the play. I do, however, feel inclined to comment on certain aspects of the show, i.e. Blanche Dubois' fantastic wardrobe.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find many photos of said wardrobe, so please forgive me as I attempt to stumble through an amateur description.

Costume Designer Tess Schofield, S.T.C.'s resident designer, has designed for numerous Operas, Musicals, and Movies. Unfortunately, none of which I've had the privilege of seeing. I base my intrigue of Tess Schofield solely on costumes conspicuously displayed in this particular show.

Unable to take my eyes off of Cate Blanchett, perhaps the intention of director Liv Ullmann, I was immediately taken with the cold sophistication of a modern southern belle moments before succumbing to a twist of life changing circumstance. In the beginning of the play Blanche DuBois was dressed in a smartly tailored suit. She was cool and aloof. Everything about Cate Blanchett, or Blanche DuBois (I don't know which), worked immaculately together. I mean to say that her suit, shoes, luggage, hair, lips, skin, superior cheek bones, voice... everything melded seamlessly and elegantly together. The tone of her character was cool, think CZ Guest. Think of a WASP in a cold Gustavian interior. In my uneducated opinion Cate didn't wear her wardrobe so much as it and she became one joint character. As the play progressed her costumes began to portray her fraying character. The wardrobe once seen as chic and collected began to loose shape and seem cheap, albeit still beautiful.

Tess Schofield showed Blanche DuBois as a great contradiction. She was both traditional and modern, soft and hard. Her character exuded a generally feminine aura with a punctuation of masculinity.
Just as stained glass windows were created not just to serve as pleasant ornamentation, but also as a means to illuminate an otherwise unattainable story to those poor wretched illiterates who were unable to read; perhaps costume designer Tess Schofield was able to capture the essence of the character so that people like me would be able to understand her story.

A few weeks ago (or longer) I posted some photos of an exceedingly perfect Bathing Beauty that I spotted at The Brass Knob Warehouse . Well, this week while on a shopping trip at said establishment I noticed a "Sold" tag hanging proudly from the aged handrail of the tub. I felt at once both happy that the dignified vessel had been adopted, and envious of a stranger who would have the pleasure of hosting such an alluring piece of bathing architecture in his home. A rush of curiosity washed over me. I bent down to read the name on the tag. .. "Darryl Carter". ..

I guess it's not enough to be wildly successful, tall, dark, and handsome. When you're the great Darryl Carter it seems you're also afforded the best tub in the District. Well done, Darryl, well done..

One of my all time favorite design tricks for interiors is the deft use of mirrors. Unfortunately, the proposal of mirror attached to wall quickly conjures up the poor treatment displayed proudly in the 1970's. Mirrored walls have a rich and powerful provenance -from overly elaborate mirrored halls of Versailles, to the gracefully chic faceted mirror staircase in the Chanel Atelier, to the sophisticated mirrored bathroom of Miles Redd. Give mirror a chance.

We may still be a couple of weeks away from the official start of Autumn, but her return is evident. There is a sharpness to the wind that is welcome and refreshing. I've noticed more foliage reminiscent of Autumn leaves, and flowers that have started to retreat for the season. In all honesty I'm generally a pretty grumpy person during the Summer -an embarrassing characteristic that seems to have been magnified with my move to the District. I'm most excited, optimistic, and thoughtful in the Fall and Winter, and am very much looking forward to the change of seasons to come!

Admittedly, chalkboard paint in interiors has been widely used for quite some time now. The concept may be a bit passe, but the moody bedroom of sappy protagonist, Tom Hansen, in 500 Days of Summer has revived my interest! After scouring the world wide web for days the only photo that I could find of said bedroom shows only the slightest glimpse of Tom's fantastic faux headboard. If you can take your eyes off of the endearing Zooey Deschanel, try to peek behind her graceful shoulder for a slight look at his awesome "headboard".

A stunning 17th century building is magically transformed by Hans Van Heeswijk Architects to house the Russian State Museum's Dutch outpost. The building was constructed for use as a "home for old women" in the 1680's, and continued to serve as an elderly institution for 324 years.

Hermitage Amsterdam highlights the pomp and poise of Russian culture in a modern and witty way. Well done.

It is clearly obvious upon entering through the doors of And Beige that Daren Miller, co-owner and style maker, has some background in visual merchandising, to say the least. The showroom is perpetually evolving and all the while a laboratory for interior inspiration.

Daren started his career as a mens trimmer at Nordstroms before climbing the visual ladder to, store visual manager, window designer, until finally reaching the storied zenith of Eastern regions visual design manager of one of the archetypes of department stores, Nordstorm.

Luckily (for future clients of And Beige), Daren started to conspire to open a shop of his own. He started by collecting sources and scouting out locations that would host his anticipated business endeavor. Smartly, he chose to launch his business in the now exceedingly popular and swiftly growing U-Street neighborhood of DC.

Daren made the time to sit down and chat with me about some of his ideas. He was a gracious and inspiring host, and I am now even more enamored of his spirit, passion, and energy than I had been before. Thank you Daren.

Scott: Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, 20.... years?
Daren: Over the next 5 to 10 years I would love to see AB grow into a larger store/ business. Meaning more space and possibly another location (outside of DC) to show more product and to offer a more lavish experience. In 20 years I would like to be retired and see the world.

S: Describe your dream project.
D: To create my own dream home (top to bottom). I also love projects when you click with your client. The relationship and partnership are so important in any design or creative project. It’s a team effort! I’ve also always had a love for hospitality design. I have a fascination with hotel lobby’s, restaurants, etc. Public spaces where people come together for short periods of time intrigue me.

S: Describe your dream home.
D: Nothing too big! I’ve always dreamed of a house with a wrap-around porch and a wide entrance hall that runs through the center of the house and out the back to a long narrow lap pool with black tiled interior. I love symmetry and believe tat the center hall of the home would create a natural balance. I love both modern and traditional style architecture so I guess it would be a mix. The interior would be comfortable and eclectic with a mix of styles and things I love. The over all color palettes kept neutral with layers of textures. I do love dark/black floors (wood and stone). A dog or two is a must so it would have to be pet friendly.

S: In your opinion, name a few design staples that every home should have.
D: Candles and fresh flowers are a must have - preferably tall tappers. I also think a comfortable place to entertain is a must. This can be a living room or family room, dining and open kitchen concept. I think a space to share with family and friends is a ust in today’s world.

S: What do you think about trends?
D: I’ve never been too much of a trend follower. Trends tend not to have longevity and I personally like a timeless and classic look in design.

S: In interior design what do you adore / abhor?
D: I enjoy the over all process of design. Creating an over all look that clicks with my client’s personality and evokes emotion. What I don’t care for is anything that is over designed.

S: What are some of your favorite sources?
D: I, of course, love all the lines that I carry at AB - such as Sylvan SF, Julian Chichester, CR Currin, Oly Studio, and Hickory Chair. A few that I love and don’t carry include Hudson Furniture, Jean De Merry, Newell Design Studio, Karl Kemp Antiques, Richard Shipario, Randall Tysinger Antiques, and 1st Dibs are always fun places to explore. Auctions and estate sales can sometimes welcome an unexpected surprise.

S: What are some of your design magazines?
D: World of Interiors is my favorite publications both for inspiration and the overall styling of the magazine. I also enjoy Elle Decor, British House and Garden, Shelter, and Elle Decoration - UK.

S: Do you follow any design blogs?
D: I’ve recently been exploring - such as local K Street Kate and Julie B. Besides yours do you recommend any?
S: Well, mine is really the only that you need worry about (joke), but you may also be interested in:

This is one of a pair of bronze dogs, Greyhounds I think, flanking a stately entrance of a home in Georgetown once occupied by J.F.K. and Jackie before presidency.

Wunderkind - Proenza Schouler

“What’s subversive and young and cool now is to be old again - it’s anti-anti” -Lazaro Hernandez

The fierce fashion duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough created their formidable house Proenza Schouler in 2002 as a thesis project while studying at Parsons School of Design. The collection immediately catapulted them into star status when it was quickly purchased by the powers that be at Barney’s. The team perpetually sent parades of models swaddled in sporty, youthful, 80’s inspired attire sauntering down the runway. And have, in a relatively short period of time, become one of today’s most influential designers. Now, the boys decided to stretch their design wings a bit by introducing a collection of textiles for archetypal interiors powerhouse Knoll. The collection reflects the designers idea of “Nonchalant luxury” by combining simple neutrals with dramatic colors.

Like most working Americans I hustle through the work week in anticipation of the freeness of yet another weekend. Once they arrive, in all their glory, it seems almost inevitable that they dissipate far too quickly. I try in vain to savor every little minute of the brief 48 hours work release, but find myself slipping easily into the standard weekend comforts of which I've grown accustom -brunch, booze, and shopping (in no particular order, and sometimes all at the same time!).

There are three shops in DC that I jones for weekly; Good Wood, Ruff & Reddy, and Miss. Pixie's. If I haven't had the opportunity to patronize these haute haunts by mid-afternoon Saturday, the design junky shakes are inexorable.

The following pictures are from last weekend. Follow Louie and I on a little virtual shopping adventure!

Proprietor and proprietoress Dan and Anna Kahoe masterfully amass the cities most modern, relevant, witty, and approachable antiques. This shop is always beautifully well appointed and the product assortment changes often -- so, be sure to check it out each week! Oh, and Louie wanted me to add that they also provide yummy doggie treats! I'm sure that my life would be infinitely more satisfying if I had this lovely dolphin lamp!

Next stop: Ruff & Reddy 1908 14th Street NW
Named after Hanna Barbera characters from the 1950's, Bill Troy's Ruff & Reddy is a veritable design junkies dream! There are many treasures to be found, if one has the patience to deal with the crowd. The more often you go, the easier it is to navigate in and out quickly. Trust me, it is well worth the temporary inconvenience of dealing with the close quarters when you walk away with a fantastic new addition to your home at a ridiculously economical price!

This desk is beautiful -the hardware, legs, leather top!!! With a little love this could make for a very smart work space!
OH, if I had a dressing room I would have snagged this victorian gem in a second!!

Shop owner Pixie Windsor (what a flippin' awesome name!) offers a great selection of quirky effects and wacky paraphernalia. She also uses her store as a launch board for local artists -great idea!

"Art and Money; or, The Story of the Room"

Deep within the formulated beauty of the Freer Gallery of Art one gets a glimpse of an almost overwhelmingly stunning display of richness, The Peacock Room.

Designed in 1876 by architect Thomas Jeckyll for wealthy London gent Frederick R. Leyland, the room served two purposes 1.) a place in which Leyland could entertain, and 2.),possibly most importantly, to display a carefully crafted collection of priceless Chinese porcelain. An elaborate network of shelving was designed to best highlight said impressive collection.

James McNeil Whistler was then commissioned to provide a work of art to serve as a focal point above the fireplace. Understanding the importance of the porcelain collection, which Whistler’s benefactor had amassed so thoughtfully, and perhaps because he was paid to do so, Whistler created “Lo Princess du Pays la Porcelaine” to proudly occupy the valuable space above the fireplace.

After his work was complete, Whistler was then brought in to act as a consultant for the finishing touches to the room’s decor. And, provide finishing touches he did!

The ceiling was guilded with a paint technique designed to emulate a peacocks feathers. Whistler didn’t stop there, although he was supposed to. He was so proud of his work, and insistent on self promoting, that he decided to start receiving company and lavishly entertaining in Leyland’s dining room sans permission. Once news had reached Whistler’s benefactor of his behavior he immediately requested that Whistler cease any further work. Upset at Leyland’s reaction Whistler released his emotion in the only way in which he knew how -he painted. He covered the expensive leather upholstered wall panels in Persian-blue paint, and decorated the wall opposite the fireplace with a scene of dueling peacocks.

One bird is believed to represent Leyland and his overbearing and controlling ways, while the other the docile and innocent Whistler.

After Leyland passed away the room was purchased from his London home by Charles Lang Freer to be disassembled, shipped, and reassembled in Freer’s Detroit home where it, I’m sure, acted as a chic backdrop for many nights of entertainment. Following Freer’s death, the room was again disassembled, shipped, and reassembled in Freer’s newly constructed art gallery in Washington, DC where still it rests quietly as if anticipated its next great move.

An eminent blogger, and possibly the chicest lady that sadly I only pseudo know, Lisa Borgnes Giramonti, the witty and inspiring writer of A Bloomsbury Life, has incited me to bloggyback from her post today. "Reflections of a 24-Hour Hermit", the perspicaciously thoughtful Mrs. Dalloway style account of one woman's decision to resign for a day, opened with a beautifully shot photograph of a "front gate". I have long admired the garden gates that accompany the well appointed townhouses lining the irrepressibly historic streets of Georgetown. Today, prompted by L.B.G.'s ability as a wordsmith to create posts that are so visually stimulating, I took a little walk and collected a few photos.

A coming-of-age story

Who knew that Ethan Allen had become so hep?! Well, not me. Ethan Allen, a company dating back to 1932, has known success and failure. Until the 90‘s the company had been known for “Early Amarican” design. But, recently E.A. has employed an astute approach to re-branding and, in doing so, modernizing the face of the company. New marketing, commercials, product, and website has helped to renovate an otherwise tired style. A smart approach in times like these, indeed. Old news at this point, but seems to be my style as of lately to report after the fact. Now, it has recently been brought to my attention that I have been slipping into a bout of bitterness. So, attempts to report on pretty things or ugly things but with a positive spin have been futile.

Having said this I'll try to remain completely diplomatic and nonjudgemental about WDC Spring 2009 show house and it's ridiculous "Urban Elegance" theme.

the foyer: Annie Elliott of Bossy Color

the dining room: Samantha Friedman of Samatha Friedman Interior Design
The blue wall covering is nice.

the media room: Matt Costigan of Costigan Design
Matt designed a nice media room. I think that he chose colors and artwork well. He placed a large sectional in the center of the room in the shape of a V... I thought that was little odd and awkward. Overall it was nice albeit a little too decoratory.

the bar / lounge: Nestor Santa-Cruz
I think that it goes without saying, but I will - Nestor is a remarkable designer. He is absolutely one of my favorite local designers. I first fell in love with his work when his DC apartment was shown in Elle Decor. He's got fantastic taste - impeccable. This room, to me, was the most comfortable and well designed. The room looks collected and like it has been developed and built over time. He used a lot of antiques - the low table housing stacks of books is a vintage daybed. Perhaps my favorite part of the room is Nestor's nod to a plasma television - artwork that looks like a vintage television hanging on a pair of painted french doors.

the children's room : Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey of SCW Interiors

I got the feeling that this was a room designed for a little boy. OH, if I could have been that lucky as a kid! I have no doubt that this young lad will most definitely grow to be quite a dandy. Well done, Shazalynn!

the family office.... another area where the idea of "Urban Elegance" was forgotten. Sandra Meyers of Sandra Meyers Design Studio, LLC (Why is every decorator so witty when it comes to naming their company?)

the grandmother's bedroom (Just kidding! It's simply and elegantly titled "bedroom") Jennie Curtis of Material Differences ( I'll bet you thought she would be with Jennie Curtis Designs, or Jennie Curtis Interiors, or perhaps J.C. Interior Design Services)

One of my least favorite rooms, not that it's not pretty. But, in typical DC fashion this room seemed to be a big hit during the opening night party. Well done, Jennie Curtis!

Lastly, the living room : Gloria De Lourdes Blalock of Blalock Interiors LLC
Gloria did a nice job. Generally not a fan of faux painting, the walls were done beautifully and subtly. She chose a lot of really pretty things, and I think that it's safe to assume that a nice looking room full of attractive furniture can sort of hold it's own. I thought that the sheers hanging from giant hooks in the center of the room were unnecessary. But the room was good.

Anyway, if you're in DC visit the show house to discover it for yourself.

Washington DC Design Center Show House

The District of Colombia is not generally so quickly associated with good design, (no offense to all of the good designers in DC). Nonetheless, she continues to play host to some annual design related events. I attended the opening of the WDC Design Center Spring show house last night, boringly themed "Urban Living". I'll post more about it later, but wanted to show a few quick iphone snapshots.

East Hampton

I was skeptical, but production designer Kalina Inavov didn't disappoint. The sets of HBO's Grey Gardens were stunning, and served as the perfectly appointed backdrop for incredibly well dressed characters...well, sometimes.

I've long been a fan of Grey Gardens, and wasn't sure of what I thought about the making of a movie... especially one staring Drew Barrymore. The movie was - good. Jessica Lange, who I honestly didn't really know, did a fantastic job of portraying Big Edie Beale. It's hard to believe that she's 60! She was stunningly beautiful, when appropriate, and painfully depressing at times. Drew Barrymore gave a typically Drew Barrymore performance despite apparently studying harder for this role than any other. The most impressively played role in the film was that of the house as portrayed by Kalina Ivanov.

Even Greyer Gardens

Last weekend I attended a very small dramatic affair, "After the Garden: Edith Beale Live at Reno Sweeney". A drag of a cabaret show held at Miss Pixies.

Jeffrey Johnson, artistic director of Ganymede Arts, plays Edith Beale beautifully. He was able to emulate the very distinctively blue-blooded cadence of little Edie in an almost too eerie way. I laughed, I drank, I laughed some more, and for a moment or two I sat quietly thoughtful. If you're in the DC area I highly recommend a trip to Miss Pixies for entertainment, libation, and procurement of fantastically original pieces second only to the originality of the Edith Beale doppelganger.

Seasonally, I like to have some point of inspiration for my costumes. This Spring the style of Robert Redford, both in films and not, will help to encourage my wardrobe.

I'm MAD about his look! I physically am probably the most opposite of Robert Redford that a person can be, but that's not going to stop me from trying to emulate his sartorial panache!

House & Garden's Complete Guide to Interior Decoration - 1953

I received some fantastic books for Christmas 2008, thank you Alex,one of which is H & G's Complete Guide to Interior Decoration from 1953. One of the chapters that I especially love is entitled Color is a Magic Wand. The chapter features work from some of America's very best decorators. The most interesting section of this chapter, in my opinion, is a two page spread documenting Van Day Truex's evolving apartment over a seven year span.

Holly Golightly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name!

Unlike Holly, whenever I get a case of the "mean reds" I don't "jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's", I stay in my bed and watch Breakfast at Tiffany's. And, for the days when even the movie won't cure me of the mean reds I've contemplated some of these:

Saturday Day Fever

I hop out of bed, prepare my costume for the day, grab a coffee, and head to my favorite junk spots! It's a Saturday morning ritual and, I'm sorry to admit, my favorite part of the weekend. (God, I'm getting old!) Last weekend I found the following...
I'm absolutely MAD about this screen!
The most amazing chandelier.The most charming lamp. This young dandy is just about as tall as I am (note: I'm short.). I've been eyeing this lad for over THREE YEARS!! (In a much less sexual sounding way.) Why hasn't someone taken him home yet?! Another perfect lamp -minus the shade.
"S for Sportsman"..... I'm not sure what sport he's involved in, but then again I don't know much about sports.

Although not a particularly good film, in my opinion- it's borderline Lifetime / Oxygen made for tv, "Evening" never lets me down when I'm in need of a visual pick-me-up. Despite the fact that the film was written by the great Michael Cunningham and is uncommonly star-studded; Claire Danes, Toni Collette, Vanessa Redgrave, Patrick Wilson, Hugh Dancy, Natasha Richardson, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, and Mamie Gummer it lacks much depth. Hugh Dancy's beautiful portrayal of an emotionally wrought, sexually confused young man, Buddy, played second fiddle only to "the Ledges".

The home, built in 1865 for the Cushing family as a Summer retreat, is as stoic as any respectable WASP. The structure is beautifully preserved, and still a vacation home for the Cushing family- lucky family. I searched for more interior photos of the house to no avail. If you haven't all ready seen it, rent it today. I know you'll love it!
